Since its inception, disability justice movements have been clear about Palestinian liberation as a disability justice issue, pointing to the interconnections between disablement and ableism, racism, and settler-colonial tactics (for example, check out this 2014 video from Sins Invalid). It’s also lifted up a politic of radical love that centers self-determination and cross-movement solidarity.
The current genocide in Gaza has now lasted for a year, and we have been witnessing terrible violence, mass disablement and the destruction of care infrastructure, refusals of humanitarian aid, and the widespread repression of critique and protest.
We have heard from members of our community, particularly students, that working out how to put disability justice into practice is not always clear. How are we to take in the news around the ongoing genocide in Palestine, and how are we to navigate the dissonance of our own lives continuing on through coursework, family, and work? How can we respond?
This event brings together three Chicago-area disabled people who have been actively negotiating a response, a way to put disability justice into practice: a writer and media critic, a fashion designer, and a scholar/spoken word poet.
Join us as they share about their practice and their thought process.
